Robin James spells out the reasons why we should rethink our views on teen idol music.
While I may not be a music theorist in the least, her historical references really reinforce the message of prejudice that is in place through our social devaluing of teen idol music. I also think we can envision mechanisms that this bias is employed through, though it is not simply a single 'patriarch' handing out social value.
Much like a high school clique, the assessment of social value is up to those who were there first, those on top. It is up to this class of social elites to hand down the generic rules of what is valued socially.
